Taking one for the team – or just taking a rest from the razor? Either way, we say THANKS!
If you have pogonophobia—a fear of beards—you might need to avoid the Facilities staff next month. They’ve decided to raise money for Winona Health’s Employee Relief Fund and raise awareness of men’s health by participating in MOvember, otherwise known as “No-Shave November.”
The plan started at the lunch table, when the Facilities guys were talking about what they could do to raise money. Greg Towner, Director of Facilities and EVS said the group “wanted to do something that will make an impact.” They also feel that men’s health is rarely talked about.
The MOvember Foundation website points out, “The state of men’s health is in crisis. Men experience worse longer-term health than women and die on average six years earlier. Prostate cancer rates will double in the next 15 years. Testicular cancer rates have already doubled in the last 50. Three quarters of suicides are men. Poor mental health leads to half a million men taking their own life every year. That’s one every minute. Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends are facing this health crisis and it’s not being talked about. We can’t afford to stay silent.”
The Facilities team saw this as an opportunity for a win-win solution. They can raise money and awareness for causes that hit close to home—and also enjoy the benefits of growing out their facial hair.
Further research from reputable web sites like bromygod.com and beardbrothersllc.com revealed even more compelling reasons to grow a beard. Abraham Lincoln grew his because an 11-year-old girl told him he would “look a great deal better,” as his face was “rather thin.” Beards can “increase your strength by 27%,” “make you a better musician,” and even serve as a “rudimentary compass.”
All kidding aside, the Facilities staff urges interested men to either donate or raise a minimum of $20 to join them for MOvember. For the unbearded participants, you have the ability to support the cause by pledging any dollar amount of your choice in the name of an individual who is growing out their facial hair for the cause.
All money raised will be given to the Employee Relief Fund, and November’s Casual for a Cause will support the effort as well. Join us in celebrating Movember by making a donation and watch for details later this month about men’s health forums and celebrations, and an awesome “after” photo.
Thanks to Facilities for such a creative and generous effort!
