The Winona Health Foundation Scholarship Committee selected Hailey Parcel to receive the Phyllis A. McClenathan Nursing Scholarship.
Parcel attends Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical and will graduate with an Associate Degree in Nursing. She currently is a certified nursing assistant on the Winona Health Medical, Surgical and Pediatrics units as well as in the Family Birth Center, where she has cared for many patients and their families. Parcel plans to continue her education with an online program through Morehead State University to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing while continuing to care for patients at Winona Health.
Dean McClenathan, along with his children Mark and Denise, established this scholarship after their wife and mother, Phyllis, a long-time nurse in Winona Health’s Family Birth Center, passed away after a long fight with cancer. McClenathan wanted to honor his wife by encouraging and helping others in their efforts to become devoted, effective and compassionate caregivers.
Receiving the McClenathan scholarship is especially meaningful to this year’s recipient. Parcel’s mother, Marty Knauer, who has been her role model, worked with Phyllis McClenathan for more than 20 years.
“She was a mentor to me and so many others,” said Knauer. “She was such a special lady, and now it comes full circle back to my daughter who is benefitting from this special scholarship.”
Phyllis McClenathan had a collection of more than 100 nurse figurines, so Dean now gives one of them to each scholarship recipient. “Many people who have received the scholarship have had some kind of a connection to Phyllis, and the figurine creates another little connection and symbolizes her legacy.”
The McClenathan family directed memorials to the scholarship fund and hopes that others will contribute so that the fund will grow and continue in perpetuity. Gifts to the Phyllis McClenathan Nursing Scholarship may be made to the Winona Health Foundation, 855 Mankato Avenue, Winona, Minn., 55987.
