The pediatrics waiting area was buzzing with excitement on Tuesday, May 31 as staff, Merchants Bank employees, and children waited for a chance to see Pudge the bear, Winona Health’s newest addition. The unveiling of a colorful new play area for children—featuring Pudge, a butterfly, and a canoe—was the result of a fundraising effort undertaken by Merchants Bank employees. During last summer’s Dancing with the Winona Stars, the Merchants Bank’s “Business Loans and Broken Bones” team danced their way to $13,705 for improving the pediatric play area. The Winona Health Foundation matched $1 for every $3 raised, resulting in total donations of $18,273 toward the new playground. The adults attending the event were impressed by the new play area, but the true test came with the children, who could hardly contain their excitement until they were let loose to climb on, crawl through, and enthusiastically play with Pudge and the rest of the playground. The Foundation is grateful to Merchants Bank for making this new play area possible, and enhancing the lives of the children who Winona Health serves.
